Upcoming Project: The Best Music You’ve Never Heard

This book was given to me as a gift by a friend when we were at the airport on our way back from London. I was ready with all my flight pack: headphones, mp3 player (ok, it’s an iPhone), a couple of sudoku puzzles and something to read-“The Best Music You’ve Never Heard“.  It is a perfect gift for someone who is desperate to learn about unknown artists.  The first thing that came to my mind was to make regular posts about the songs in the book  like I used to make before. But after I started reading it, I decided to turn this book into a project. I’ll be sharing some interesting information about artists from this book and my favorite songs of theirs with you. I know that I have to make a lot of research and listen to thousands of songs. This book will be my guide through this journey. As a matter of fact, I made my very first post about a song from this book (you’ve already seen it here ) three weeks ago.

“Sometimes the music was genuinely ahead of its time. Sometimes it simply failed to find an audience due to the stupidity and/or venality of record companies, managers and other hangers-on. But in each case, the result was the same – great music didn’t get the exposure or sales it deserved at the time” says the writer of the book, Nigel Williamson who is a former news editor of The Times, a rock writer and a journalist. There are also other writers such as David Smyth and Robert Webb, who have contributed to some sections.   So, stay tuned for for the next couple of days bacause I’ll be sharing some playlists and amazing stories about the artists under the guide of this brilliant book.

Merry Christmas!

Red Hot Chili Peppers Istanbul Concert, 8 September 2012

After years spent trawling music websites, digital music magazines and music web communities I felt like I need to create my own space to share the stuff I discover everyday. With the feedback I get from you, I’ve started including short writings about the artists or my thoughts about the songs – which isn’t easy for me since I’m not very good at writing! Now here’s another step forward in which I’ll be sharing some personal stuff with you.

This is me at the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Istanbul on September 8th 2012. You can see that I’m smiling like a cheshire cat. The reason is, I used to listen to RHCP a lot when I was in middle school and like the whole generation, I’ve been waiting for a RHCP concert here for ages! Finally, we attained our desire. Needless to say the concert was incredibly crowded: there were 42,000 Turkish fans! RHCP played many of their hit songs besides the songs from their new album “I’m With You” . As a very very big  fan of John Frusciante, I should admit that this concert would have blown my mind if he was still playing with the band, but still it was an amazing concert. I wish I was taller so that I could see the stage and take a couple of photos behind the thousands of other people.

Because I’ve started listening to RHCP albums when I was a middle school kid, the first album that I got was “Californication” which was released on June, 1999. I used to have a small Sony casette-player back then. Afterwards I tried catching up with their older albums such as “Blood Sugar Sex Magik“, “Mother’s Milk“, etc. but it will never change the fact that “Californication” has a special place in my heart.  Anyway, I thought it’d be a good idea to share my all-time favorite RHCP songs with you, enjoy !

4) “Around the World” from their 1999 album, Californication

The Perris – Pirates In Jacuzzi

‘Pirates in Jacuzzi’ is another song by The Perris from their Hic Sunt Leones album released in January 2010.

In a previous post, I mentioned that the ‘Perri‘ brothers started to play together after a childhood of ‘forced cohabitation’. After listening to all their songs, I can say that this group has a very promising future. They released their last album Universi Piccolissimi in September 2012; I hope we can listen to their new album soon…

Chet Faker – No Diggity

When Nick Murphy began playing under his own name, people came to his gigs and said, “Who the hell is this?” There was already an artist called Nick Murphy in Australia. So in homage to Chet Baker, he opted to become ‘Chet Faker’. It seemed to work. Instantaneously his uncategorizable works made him a star on music blogs. Listen to this great song from his first EP ‘Thinking in Textures‘.
